The Hanoi Hash House Harriers (HHHH) is a social group that organizes cross-country runs combined with fun and social drinking. The group follows a trail laid by “hares” with false paths to ensure all participants finish together. Originally founded in Kuala Lumpur in 1938, this activity has spread to 2030 chapters worldwide. The history of the Hash House Harriers includes unique traditions, post-WWII revival, and the spread of the hashing culture globally. Participants enjoy camaraderie, drinks, and light-hearted competition without any official membership.

THE FOUNDING “HASH HOUSE HARRIERS” (1938)
The idea of harriers chasing on a paper trail was not new to Malaysia in 1938, as there had been such clubs before in Kuala Lumpur, Johore Bahru, Malacca and Ipoh (the ‘Kinta’ Harriers). “Horse” Thompson, one of the KLH3 Founding Fathers, recalled being invited on a run shorty after his arrival in Johore Bahru in 1932, which chased a paper trail and followed basic Hash rules every week, but that club had no name and died out around 1935.

The other branch of our ancestry came from Malacca, where A.S. (“G”) Gispert was posted in 1937 and joined a club called the Springgit Harriers, who also operated weekly under Hash rules. “Torch” Bennett visited Gispert some months later and ran as a guest on a few runs.

The Hash House Harriers is an international group of non-competitive social running clubs. Enthusiasts refer to themselves as “hashers” and to the activity as “hashing”. Although the parameters that each chapter sets may differ, in general, a hare sets a trail and is followed by the pack. At the run’s conclusion, hashers typically eat, drink, and socialize. The group typically gets together to humourously note on-trail misbehaviour with tongue-in-cheek drinking songs and “down downs”. Socializing

The end of a trail is an opportunity to socialize, have a drink, and observe the traditions of the individual kennel (see Traditions). When the hash officially ends, members may continue socializing at an “on-after”, “on-down”, “on-on-on”, “apres”, or “hash bash”, an event held at a nearby pub, or restaurant, or private home.
